What is the attraction to butch s and effiminate gay men?

I promise I am not trying to be offensive. I have always wondered this. To femme s and butch gay men: Can you explain to me the attraction to the butch s and effiminate men. I would think that if a man is attracted to another man, he is attracted to the characteristics that differentiate men from women, and likewise a would be attracted to the characteristics that differentiate women from men. I understand that these are simply characteristics of a traditional gender role, but still. I am a heteroual male, and am attracted to feminine women, so logically I would think that a is attracted to the same. Is this not the case? I have never understood this. I see a handsome "manly" man with a femmy, flambouyant man, and I always wonder about it. Likewise I see a beautiful, feminine woman with a very butch woman and have the same reaction. Can someone break it down for me? Thanks. Really, I am not trying to be offensive or make any kind of point. Just curious.
